National Electronics Retailer

Situation

-       RPR started to manage the pre-press for a 60-year-old national retail electronics chain of over 550 stores when they a proprietary system to produce circular repros for their ad programs before RPR transitioned them to a digital production workflow.

-       When the retail chain needed to move forward, RPR was there - and after many years of loyal service and continually saving the electronics giant hundreds of thousands of dollars in workflow solutions a year, the company decided to contract RPR to migrate all of their production in-house.

-

The Client / RPR Relationship

-       For over a decade, RPR took the chain’s creative concepts and converted them into weekly four-color circulars and newspaper ads. RPR served as the liaison and primary representative to the 22+ printers throughout the U.S. and oversaw the hundreds of weekly print and supporting versions to include proper printing specifications and requirements for cold web, heat set, rotogravure, and flexography programs.

-      RPR created an image database for the retail giant, which started with mostly grayscale images and developed into their first collection of CMYK photography storage that grew providing a complete library to include logo and ad reference collections. RPR was responsible for faciliating the company’s first introduction to a digital file format, PDF and direct-to-plate workflows and process improvement.

-      RPR conducted staff meetings with the corporate management, went on press checks and provided on-site training for their creative staff to improve process color and page building production. A Windows PC platform was being used that added a degree of complexity to their OPI/APR workflow to which RPR countered with a low-resolution image process for swap when ripping final high-resolution pages. As a national retail chain there was a need for multiple versions which prompted RPR to create a systemized page building technique that utilized layers - expediting the numerous versions while saving time and reducing errors.

-

Solution / Migration

-       After several careful and thoughtful planning sessions, RPR’s technical staff reconfigured the Windows PC workstations for the corporate creative staff. RPR installed all the industry standard publishing applications, fonts, utilities, and plug-ins/extensions. These required tools were built into the installation and facilitated all necessary production and preflight functions, including Quark Xpress, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Extensis Flight Check, Acrobat Distiller, and Pitstop, etc.

Benefits
-        In an industry of perpetual change, RPR was contracted to serve as consultants with cutting-edge technology, problem solvers, teachers, and business partners. When their client identified the goal to move all facets of production internally, RPR built a plan for implementation. And when RPR was asked for this to be completed in two years, RPR finished moving the production in-house in a year-and-a-half and under budget.

These efforts demonstrate RPR’s consistent cutting edge approach to solutions that resulted in an annual savings of over $300,000 for the electronics chain and expanded their reach to improve time-to-market.
